Business financing, public and bank.

Public and bank financing are not alternatives: they are assembled together. The public guarantee is what gets the bank loan approved; the repayable contribution is what completes the equity the lender requires. This page places each source, what it finances, and how they stack in a single structure.

The sources of financing

Crown corporation loans
BDC, Export Development Canada, Farm Credit Canada and their provincial equivalents lend directly to businesses, often on terms and security a commercial bank would not accept.
Repayable contributions
Regional development agencies fund expansion projects through interest-free repayable contributions. This is financing, not a grant, and it appears on the balance sheet.
The bank loan, and what unlocks it
The bank remains the most common and the cheapest financing for an established business. It rarely refuses on the project: it refuses on security, on the equity contribution, or on track record. That is precisely what the guarantees and repayable contributions below are there to fill. Assembling both, in the right order, changes the lender’s answer.
Loan guarantees
The program does not advance the money: it guarantees part of a loan made by an institution. This is what unlocks a file rejected for lack of security.
Equipment and working capital
Two distinct needs that are often confused. Equipment depreciates over years and is financed long; working capital covers a cash-flow gap and is financed short.
Venture and growth capital
Equity is given up in exchange for funds. Suited to fast growth in a large market, unsuited to a stable and profitable services business.
Startup and business transfer
Startup loans, mandatory mentorship, succession financing. Terms are softer, amounts smaller, and mentorship is often part of the deal.

How to choose, in four steps

The right financing is not the cheapest one: it is the one whose term matches the term of the need.

  1. 01 Name the need Buy a machine, hire, absorb a 90-day payment delay, open a foreign market. Each calls for a different instrument.
  2. 02 Look at public sources first A public loan or repayable contribution often costs less than private financing and requires giving up no equity. It is the first place to look, not the last.
  3. 03 Prepare the numbers Financial statements for the last two or three years, cash-flow forecasts, order book. No lender, public or private, advances funds without them.
  4. 04 Stack it properly A project is rarely financed from a single source. Grant plus loan plus own contribution is the common structure — provided each program allows stacking, which its official page states.
