The numbers that keep a business standing.

A grant is applied for on the strength of financial statements, a loan is obtained on cash-flow forecasts, a tax credit is claimed in a return. This page describes each function, what it produces, and who to entrust it to.

The functions covered

Bookkeeping
The daily entries: invoices, expenses, bank reconciliation. Without it, everything else is reconstructed in a rush at year-end, at three times the cost.
Financial statements
Compilation, review engagement or audit, in ascending order of assurance and cost. The level required is set by the lender or the program, not by the business.
Corporate tax
Income tax return, GST/HST and QST, instalments, tax elections. This is also the route for SR&ED and most tax credits.
Payroll and source deductions
Withholdings, year-end slips, provincial schemes. Payroll errors are paid for in penalties, and they repeat every period.
Management control and forecasting
Budget, cash-flow forecasts, costing, dashboard. This is the document lenders ask for, and the one most often missing.
Program reporting
Support obtained nearly always comes with reporting obligations: eligible expenses, supporting documents, deadlines. A late report can cancel a payment.

Choosing a provider, in four steps

The right provider is not the cheapest on the list: it is the one that has already handled a file shaped like yours.

  1. 01 Separate the mandatory from the rest Filings and payroll are mandatory and recurring. Forecasting and management control are one-off and project-driven. The two need not go to the same provider.
  2. 02 Check the professional designation An audit or review engagement can only be signed by a chartered professional accountant registered with their provincial order. That is verifiable on the order’s public register, online, free.
  3. 03 Describe the need once The platform’s requirement form exists for this: the description is written once and sent to providers whose service, province and budget range match.
  4. 04 Compare on paper Two or three written quotes, scope and exclusions included. A quote received through the platform is time-stamped and kept on a private tracking link.
